Destination Mauritius: Long Beach Hotel

What is essential to man: simplicity, origins, the beauty of nature, and the glorious remnants of an era long gone but alive with the threads of language, culture and tradition.

Sun Resorts, World Leisure Holidays and Air Mauritius make this possible with a journey of discovery at their signature resorts of Long Beach and Le Touessrok.

Finding a perfect island paradise is part of every travelers dream.  The third rock from Africa, over Madagascar – you will discover the splendours of the tropical island of Mauritius.

After a four hour trip on Air Mauritius we descended into Port Louis. It seemed that the islanders at the airport recognized me. The locals were very friendly even though we looked like a bus hit us.

The Long Beach experience

In harmony with its awesome setting rises Long Beach. Long Beach, located on the east coast and has one of the longest, widest stretches of beach in Mauritius. A luxury beach resort inspirationally conceived to capture the essence of  the surrounding natural wonders and host the most welcome and appreciated guests with world-class luxury.

This World Leisure Holidays destination offers the perfect setting for rare moments of romance, adventure, and excitement and memories to last a lifetime.

Our tour guide whisked us off to Long Beach on the East Coast of the island, an hour’s trip from the airport. We arrived at 22H00 at Long Beach. Hotel staff were notified with a sounding of the gong that guests had arrived.   A spicy chilled drink was the perfect way to temper down the humidity of Mauritius. Samad Naveerasoon, Sales Manager of Long Beach, greeted us and check-in staff made us feel right at home.

Bonjour, Hello and Namaste

Staff at the hotel spoke fluent French, which made communication very easy for us. If you fail to impress with your ‘kitchen French’ you could opt to communicate in English, which was also the accepted language of the locals.

World Class Food Experience

Long Beach’s food courtyard was abuzz with activity as guests enjoyed a wide variety of cuisine from the 4 main restaurants whilst being entertained by local entertainment.

We were spoilt when it came to selection from the four restaurants. A great variety of dining experiences.  Guests can opt for a traditional Japanese experience at Hasu or for an ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ journey at Sapori, specializing in Italian. At Long Beach, Sapori, their Italian style deli, hits the spot with pizza and pasta.  A good spot to relax over an informal lunch when it is bathed in a gentle sun, or dine under the stars.

Le Marche the international cuisine venue catered for everything else!

The Le Marche restaurant boasts seven open kitchens that offer a theatrical experience, as dishes were prepared.  We opted for the international cuisine at Le Marche and settled down after a light selection from the buffet menu.  The courtyard was alive with performances that kept everyone on their feet. After a light meal we tried the local rum cocktails that went straight to the head.

Should you prefer Chinese, then Chopsticks restaurant is guaranteed to quench your palate. Modern Chinese at Chopsticks a combination of east meets west with both classic and contemporary dishes.

Shores at Long Beach is the vibrant and buzzing cocktail and lounge bar overlooking the beach, fabulous as the sunsets. Order one of their signature cocktails and share in the fun!

We checked into our beachside rooms around 11:45. The view from the rooms was awe-inspiring! The horizon was breathtaking. With just the natural light of the moon, the beach and the shore are clearly visible.

Apart from the exotic view from the balcony, the room’s very chic design blended the harmony of the hotels exterior.  Calm and restful shades; creams, azure blue blending with turquoise are the colours of Long Beach and used throughout the rooms and suites. Sliding doors open onto the veranda where you can laze, read a book and switch off.  Each room is designed such that you have a view of the ocean.

To ensure you feel right at home Long Beach offers you a chance to connect on the complimentary Wi-Fi  so you can share your experiences with the rest of the world. No matter how tired you are, the somewhat calming ambiance of your room and the back and forth motion of the ocean will awaken you from your slumber.  A sight for sore eyes was the beach in the morning; a tri-colour ocean met your gaze with fisherman boats already searching for the next best catch!

The morning after…

The gentle breeze that wafted across the ocean cools you down as you enjoy a magnificent view of the ocean whilst you have your breakfast. We sauntered off quite early to breakfast at Le Marche, a buffet feast to cater for any taste and where friendly chefs are at your service.

Sun and sand activities

Long Beach ensures that the beach is cleaned daily before sunrise so guests enjoy an untouched stretch of bliss every day.

Tourists who want to work off a tan could choose no other better venue than Long Beach where the sun factor and humidity is at its highest at this resort. The endless stretch of pristine white sand offers one the chance to unwind and enjoy the surrounds of Long Beach. The hotels beach activities offer you the opportunity to kite surf, abseiling, snorkel and a variety boating of activities.

Weather is blissfully hot with the typical humidity that is any visitor’s dream especially to work on a tan. It took me not more than a day in the East Coast’s sun to develop my tan that left me quite satisfied. After an early tuck in at Le Marche’s international cuisine, we sauntered off to the beach for a long soak of the sun before an afternoon of exploration of the islands tourist spots with our tour guide.

Tides Restaurant

The restaurant Tides, offers one a large selection of fresh fish from the surrounding waters and also from around the world. Whilst enjoying the splendours of Long Beach make sure you enjoy a sumptuous lunch and accompany your meal with a tasting of the famed Chamarel rum of Mauritius. Chamarel rum is achieved by distilling the fresh, fermented cane juice rather than that obtained from molasses. It is a lengthy process making up for only 5% of the world’s production of high-quality rum.

A must experience is the Snapper dish which is the signature dish of the Tides venue. Red snapper is lean and moist, with a sweet, mild but distinct flavor. The texture of snapper ranges from soft to firm —it is the firmer fish that are perfect for grilling. Found worldwide, snapper is among the best fish to eat and definitely a must have when visiting Long Beach. For dessert, indulge yourself in the Pina Colada ice cream with Malibu.

If you fancy a tour of the selection of wines and rums, ask for Kuvin. He is known for his vast knowledge and tasting of wines.  Kuvin is the Sommelier at Long Beach; his background in wine is extensive. He studied in Bordeaux both at the Château Haut-Marbuzet and Saint-Estèphe. His Long Beach wine list is impressive and interestingly enough selected over 80% South African wines, all chosen in blind tasting.

Sea Spa, Long Beach

No holiday is ever complete without an exotic pampering at the Long Beach Spa. Indulge in signature treatments, which are guaranteed to ensure you are well rested and rejuvenated. On the last morning at Long Beach Resort, there was no better way to end it but with a rejuvenating Hammam Spa treatment. The atmosphere was a sense of absolute calm and relaxation. I discovered the relaxing and healing effects of the Hammam Steam Room after a full body rub of the black soap treatment. It is an experience of the senses as your body unwinds in a rejuvenating, deeply penetrating blanket of steam. Refreshing essential oils are infused in the air as steam is absorbed in your pores, releasing built up stress and toxins leaving you feeling cleansed and balanced.  This state of the art microdermabrasion technology provides the most effective, non invasive full body treatment for the softening of fine lines, skin discoloration, enlarged pores, sun, age spots and scaring. An advanced exfoliating treatment resurfaces the skin’s outer layer with a jet of superfine crystals to reveal renewed skin immediately.

Highly recommend that you indulge in a Green Tea session before you end your experience at the spa.

The Thali Sens (Ultimate Rejuvenation)

Thali’sens unites Thalassotherapy know-how with the cornucopia of nature originating in far away places – beyond the seas and oceans. The Spa well-being treatment has been combined with marine efficiency to give you a wonderful skin and ultimate relaxation.

The treatment menu invites you to escape for a time in order to rediscover yourself. By travelling from one world to another, we hear the needs of our bodies; we revisit the sense of touch and finally achieve harmony. During the treatment, tensions fade away, the body feels lighter and the skin becomes soft and radiant.

The essential qualities of Thali’sens embody the spirit of these exotic destinations and will flood the senses with feelings reminiscent of these far away places: free yourself of toxins with Orient, revitalize and tone yourself with Atlantic, enjoy the feeling of calm of Asia, the sensation of complete relaxation of Polynesia and finally discover a new energy with Amazon.

Thali’sens offers an escape from time and space by incorporating customised movements and rituals providing new experiences to the senses and touch to the skin.

After my experience of the Sea Spa at Long Beach, it was time to make my journey to another destination that is famed for its unique experience, come join me at Le Tousserok.

About Long Beach, Mauritius

Long Beach Resort had opened in June 2011. The hotel’s charm appeals to both couples and families alike. The design of the hotel applies a modern feel and look. This is what sets Long Beach apart from the 100 odd hotels on the island.

For the fourth edition of these awards, Hôtel & Lodge did a preliminary selection of 25 hotels in 2011 for the “Best Resort” category. The selected hotels all presented a very high profile and the list was then submitted to a jury composed of journalists, photographers and important readers.

In the category where Long Beach was a competitor, three hotels were nominated, namely Long Beach; the Six Senses Con Dao, located on an island in the North of Vietnam; and Kenoa, an ultra-design beach hotel in the Nordeste in Brasil.

Alexandre Espitalier Noël, Commercial Manager of Sun Resorts in France, was officially presented this prize at a gala evening at the Park Hyatt Vendôme in Paris on Thursday 12 January 2012. « It is a great honour for us to note that this commendation for Long Beach brings the hotel at the level of other hotels of the like of Amangiri, the Grand Hôtel du Cap Ferrat or still the Seven,” he says.

In September 2011, Long Beach had already been included in the ‘100 Best Hotels in the World’ 2011 list by The Sunday Times Travel Magazine, Britain’s leading travel magazine. “Only nine months after its opening, Long Beach wins another world class commendation. This contributes to position Long Beach as an exceptional and unique contemporary hotel in Mauritius and the region. I congratulate the Management and team members of Long Beach in their endeavour to transform the hotel into one of the best resorts in the region,” comments Arnaud Martin, Chief Marketing Officer of Sun Resorts.
