About

The Durban Hindu Temple – Shree Thakurdwara and Dharmashala is located at 24 Somtseu Road, Durban – an area referred to during the Apartheid era as Magazine Barracks. As part of the implementation of apartheid policies, like the Group Areas Act, people were removed from the Magazine Barracks, and resettled in areas including Chatsworth and Phoenix, which were much further from the Durban city centre.

The temple has however survived adversity and this year commemorates 114 years. Although Pran Pratishtha was originally done when the temple opened, additions have been made over the years and new murthis have been donated. Some murthis have also been damaged and need to be replaced. The main temple is still in original form and has been declared a national heritage site. In recent years, 6 satellite shrines were built. The temple currently also has 2 halls built on the premises, where all celebrations are held, and collectively houses 600 people.
