Cape Town celebrates India’s Republic Day

indian lifestyleIndia’s newly-appointed Consul-General in Cape Town Her Excellency Dr Swati Kulkarni will lead commemoration of India’s 64th Republic Day, with an event at the Royal Cape Yacht Club on Saturday, January 26, 2013.

Says HE Dr Kulkarni: ‘I am delighted to host this year’s Republic Day of India in a country with which it shares civilizational and historical relations, most importantly iconic leaders in Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela between them.’

About 300 dignitaries from all walks of life –  Parliamentarians, Non Resident Indians, South Africans of Indian origin and others – are expected to participate in the event. The event will witness, inter-alia, a cultural programme showcasing Indian dance and music. Cape Town’s three prominent Indian dance schools will perform dances from different parts of India. Merle O’Brien of Odissi Niketan Africa based at UCT School of Dance will perform dance of the eastern state of Orissa called Odissi.

Students of Olica Maniram’s Nataraja Dance Academy will perform classical dance of the northern part of India called Kathak and students of Vadhini Indian Dance Academy in Rylands will showcase classical dance from South India called Bharatnatyam. Mutalib Parker of Bazm-e-Adab will recite a patriotic poem.
