The Great Gatsby is the latest 3D adaptation of the much-loved romantic classic by F Scott Fitzgerald, directed by Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) and starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby. The beautifully designed, elegant and opulent ‘20s-style costumes and jewellery that feature so prominently in the production and will have you drooling with desire, are the work of two-time Academy Award®-winning production and costume designer Catherine Martin (Moulin Rouge).

The narrating character in the story, Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), is an aspiring young writer who moves from the Midwest to a buzzing 1920s New York City, in an era of prosperity that was accompanied by loosening morals, bootlegging, jazz and razzle-dazzle parties.

Chasing his own American dream, Nick finds himself living next door to a mysterious, party-throwing millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan) and her boorish and philandering yet blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton).  Nick is gradually drawn into the captivating and alluring world of this group of the super-affluent, including their illusions, loves and deceit.

The Great Gatsby releases at Ster-Kinekor theatres countrywide on Friday, 17 May.
