Hosted by the dapper young Shahid Kapur and the King Khan – Shah Rukh Khan, this year’s IIFA awards started off by surprising the audience with some backstage melodrama. The audience watched as Shahid Kapur kidnapped the original host of the show, Boman Irani, and hijacked the hosting duties! Boman Irani remained tied to a chair in the audience for most of the show!
Shahid’s filmy entry was a never-seen-before stunt on an award show where he fought with bouncers, a Samurai sword wielding female assassin, and a group of Kung-Fu fighters – all in order to make it to the IIFA stage!
Boman Irani kept trying to break free and even managed to get award presenters Fardeen Khan and Aftab Shivdasani to wheel him on to the stage while still tied, in an attempt to stop Shahid from carrying out his hosting duties!
Boman’s final game plan was to call the Badshah of Bollywood – Shah Rukh Khan, to help him out. Even though Shah Rukh was in a sling because of a shoulder surgery, he managed to stun Shahid with his Chennai-style high duty stunt entry…. until Shahid realised that it was a stunt double who was masquerading as King Khan!
SRK and Shahid had the audience in splits from the word go… SRK had Yami Gautam blushing, when he claimed that every year the female debutante has to go out on a date with the hosts of IIFA! He and Shaid then proceeded to rag 3 of Bollywood’s newcomers – Sushant Singh Rajput, Ayushman Khurana, and Parineeti Chopra in an FYFI (First Year Film Industry) test. The highlights of this session were Shah Rukh’s comic rendition of his Devdas dialogues, him shocking everyone by breaking a bottle on Ayushman’s head, Shahid doing a sexy cabaret number, Sushant unable to dance to the ‘Maanjha’ song, and Parineeti singing ‘Pareshaan’. This interaction also had SRK singing ‘Sooraj hua maddham’ in a voice uncannily similar to Sonu Nigam’s and stunning the audience! Until Sonu got a little carried away and decided to stand up on his chair in the audience and continue the song!!
Later in the show, SRK and Shahid keep up their antics by holding an IIFA ki Adaalat in the midst of the audience! They shocked Vidya Balan by accusing her of having “awards ki hawas”. But when Vidya asked SRK how many awards he has collected over the years, SRK had to admit he had more than 150. And when Vidya continued to interrogate him by asking “Inmein se kitne khareede hain?” the 2 lawyers quickly decided to drop the case!
The next victim was Anurag Basu who was accused of having an affair with Ranbir Kapoor! Shocking pictures of the 2 of them kissing were also shown as proof. But when SRK discovers a semi-naked picture of Shahid Kapur in Anurag’s wallet, the case took on a new angle… especially with Anurag Basu threatening to reveal some of Shah Rukh’s bathtub pictures in his possession! The entire court proceedings had all the stars and the audience members clutching their sides with laughter!
Some of the best performances of the night included Sushant’s amazing tribute to Lord Ganesha which marked an auspicious start to the show, Ayushman and Parineeti’s first ever stage performance together where they portrayed romance to music from DDLJ and songs like Pareshaan, Marjaiyaan and Tum Hi Ho.
Abhishek Bachchan’s refreshing act started outside the venue in the midst of real audience and ppumped up the energy of the entire show! Shah Rukh Khan, in spite of his sling, danced to the popular song ‘1,2,3,4’ from his upcoming film Chennai Express. Deepika Padukone sizzled in her biggest hits of this year from race 2, Cocktail and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. But one of the biggest highlights of the evening were the dancing legends – Sridevi and Prabhu Deva performing together for the first time! And when Shahid Kapur joins them for a fun gig in the middle of the act, the audience appreciation could be heard miles away!
The showstopper of the vening, though, was the ever graceful Madhuri Dixit whose act started off with a visually stunning performance where 3D images were projected onto her 10 feet long skirt! She then proceeded to do all her famous hook steps and then moving on to some of the biggest dance hits of this year – Fevicol, Radha and Ghagra!
