Expressing oneself through art is a timeless practice that will undoubtedly continue forever. One of the most beautiful, subtle, sophisticated and graceful of these dance forms is Bharatanatyam, hailing from the Southern state of Tamil Nadu in India. Bharatanatyam started as a temple dance tradition called Dasiyattam (the dance of the maid-servants) more than 2000 years ago and is perhaps the most advanced and evolved dance form of all the classical Indian dance forms. The name Bharatanatyam is a simple derivation from the four most important aspects of dance. These are (in Sanskrit): Bha from Bhava meaning emotion, Ra from Raaga meaning music or melody, Ta from Taala meaning rhythm and Natyam meaning dance. Thus Bharatanatyam is the dance that encompasses music, rhythm and expressional dance or Abhinaya and strictly adheres to the Natyashastra (the scripture of classical Indian dance).
NATYA ANJALI, meaning Salutation to Dance was founded in 1998 by Subashni Naicker . Through our teaching we wish:
- To present Bharatanatyam as a cultured, highly skilled and beautiful medium of expression.
- To maintain and develop Bharatanatyam in its traditional form through teaching and performing.
- To enrich the cultural life of the community by sharing the beauty and spirituality of dance.
