In episode 1 Razia travels to Lahore to meet writer Mohammed Hanif. Previously an officer, a pilot and a journalist, he is now a satirical novelist exploring the contradictions in Pakistani society, one of the new generation of writers in Pakistan keen to show there is much more to the country than conflict. Hanif talks to Razia about his decision to write about minorities in Pakistan today and why he likes to make his readers laugh.

In Episode 2 Razia Iqbal meets the Pakistani novelist Kamila Shamsie. Shamsie has written extensively about her home city of Karachi, but her last two novels have spanned several continents and decades in history, from Nagasaki to 9/11, and from the excavation of India’s ancient history to its nascent independence movement. Shamsie talks to Razia about why she is drawn to the themes of loyalty and belonging.
