VARANASI: The controversial remarks on Sai Baba of Shirdi by Shakaracharya of Jyotish and Dwaraka-Sharda peeths Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati rocked Varanasi, where the devotees from both sides indulged in verbal attack and counter attack on Tuesday.
While the a group of Sai devotees denouncing Shankaracharya’s remarks assembled at Lahurabir crossing and burnt the effigy of the seer, scores of ‘Dandi sanyasi’ in support of Shankaracharya observed fast at Mumukshu Bhawan and condemned lodging case against him.
The Sai devotees led by Vinod Pandey staged demonstration, sang bhajan and raised slogans against Shankaracharya before burning effigy. They accused the seer of hurting the sentiments of Sai devotees.
On the other hand “Dandi Sanyasins’ led by Ishwaranandji Teerth, general secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Dandi Mahasamiti, came forward in support of Shankaracharya. They observed fast at Mumukshu Bhawan, Assi condemning the police case against Shankaracharya. “It is highly objectionable to lodge case against Shankaracharya, who represents Lord Shiva,” they said.
It may be recalled that Swami Swaroopanand incited controversy by saying that worshipping Sai Baba was a conspiracy to divide Hindus. According to him, Sai Baba should not be worshipped as he was a human being and not a God. He was was booked in Shirdi for his statement.
