Avashnee Vandiar is a 27 year old Media Personality who is currently making waves in the industry with her vivacious personality in the entertainment arena.
Vandiar is an example that young girls from small towns with average earning parents can achieve and accomplish dreams with hard work and perseverence. Avashnee achieved academically as an A student, occupied leadership roles and in University represented KZN as a finalist for the L’Oreal Brandstorm challenge and was selected to be part of the Unilever graduate program.
Despite many academic highlights, Avashnee knew that performing arts and broadcast media is what she was truly passionate about. The Professional Indian dancer may seem to be new in the scene but has worked extremely hard throughout the years to hone her skills and talents as a TV and Radio Host, Actress, Dancer, Producer and budding Entrepreneur.
Since graduating with a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree majoring in Marketing; Media and Communications at the University of KZN, the ambitious Entertainment Presenter/Producer moved to Johannesburg to pursue her dreams in the media industry. To pay her bills, she worked in the corporate field of Media, Fashion as a Marketing/PR strategist. Whilst working her 8-5 job, Avashnee kept her eye on the ball and went for auditions, workshops, and worked for various Production houses doing ad hoc Presenting work. Avashnee won the Miss Asia pageant in 2006 and was selected as a finalist for the infamous Miss Bollywood IPL pageant. The pageant was the brainchild of Francois Pienaar and aired live on MNET. The talented Presenter also shared the stage with iconic singer, AKON. She was the principal dancer and the face on poster for various productions in Durban and Johannesburg and participated in various dance and modelling shows which honed her skills in performing arts. She trained under International choreographer, Shiamak Davar and modelled for International designer Tarun Tahiliani. She acted in 4 local movies (1 released at the Durban International Film Festival and 3 are currently unreleased).
The ambitious and persistent lass eventually landed a full time job with the SABC as a Producer and Presenter for the Prime time mid-morning daily show on Lotus FM on a show called Life N Style. The show increased listenership and launched an annual bootcamp which was extremely successful. The success of the bootcamp ensured a cross content promotion between the Doctors Orders show and Life N Style. Avashnee also got 2 listeners married for the first time onair and reunited 2 sisters. She also produced and presented her own early morning show which aired on Sundays between 3-7am on LotusFM called “The Morning Makeover”.
Her creative and strategic skills combined ensured unique concepts and quality output. Avashnee was recommended for an audition with 413 Media Productions and landed the role as the Durban Presenter for Saffron TV. The Head of Programming at the channel appoached Vandiar to present the South Indian part of the weekly Indian Entertainment Show as well.
In October 2013 Avashnee joined Africa News Network as the Producer and Presenter for the daily Entertainment News show. Avashnee was the first member of the team to cover events and trained the other Producers on outdoor shoots and creative directed shoots as well. Avashnee researches; coordinates; schedules; plans and directs shoots for the channel. Upon presenting and covering the shoot; Avashnee scripts; produces and offline edits. Upon completion of insert; Avashnee quality checks the final product before it airs because she aims to ensure a quality product exposed at all times.
Avashnee was hired for her experience, skills and ideas and upon covering key events like SA Fashion Week; Johannesburg International Motor show and exclusive interviews, she was offered the role of Anchoring the Entertainment show along with the current Anchor. The Head of News/Assignment appoached Avashnee to join his team as the Entertainment/Lifestyle reporter for the Channel which she did along with Producing and presenting for the daily Entertainment news show. When stalwart present Gerry Elsdon resigned from the breakfast show; Avashnee’s interview skills were required for the breakfast show on the weekend and in addition to reporting, she produced and presented inserts for the weekend breakfast show, ‘Vuka Afrika’. On the 23rd of June 2014 Avashnee was appoached within ANN7 by another stalwart Anchor; Chantal Rutter Dros to join the flagship show on the Channel as the Entertainment Anchor on Prime News for the launch of the New Prime. Avashnee was also appoached within ANN7 by the Head of Programming for her knowledge of SA Entertainment and Indian Entertainment news and asked to present on the East N’ Style show as an additional Presenter. As a result; Avashnee currently reports on the key and exclusive local and International news/events/interviews for the channel; produces and anchors the daily Entertainment segment on Prime News; pre-records “on the couch” interviews for the weekend breakfast show inserts and from the 7th of July, pre-records for the weekly East N’ Style show.
In 2013 Avashnee was voted best and most popular theatre MC at the Good Food and wine show in Durban which took place at the Durban ICC and this year Vandiar made Top 3 out of 6000 Presenters for the SABC – Metro FM Black Carpet Presenter Search.
