Bharata Natyam Auditions

FLATFOOT DANCE COMPANY in collaboration with the Playhouse Dance Residency are looking for x2 classically trained female Bharatha Natayam and/or Kathak dancers for an up-coming dance theatre work being created by Lliane Loots for the Playhouse Drama Theatre.  The work, entitled BHAKTI, is a joint venture between award winning choreographer Lliane Loots, and the Playhouse Company (Durban).

Dancers need to fulfil the following criteria in order to audition:

  1. Be over 20 years of age,
  2. Be available FULL-TIME (9am to 5pm daily and some negotiated Saturdays) over the whole of November 2014,
  3. Have a strong classical Bharatha Natayam and/or Kathak training but must be willing to work in a contemporary dance idiom that requires a sharing of skills and dance styles.
  4. Must be open to a workshop process!
  5. Dancers will be working in a paid professional environment and will need to fulfil the standards required of a professional dancer. The fee (pending experience levels) will range between R6 000 to R8 000 for the month of November and the duration of the work from rehearsal to performance.

AUDITION INFORMATION

  • DATE OF AUDITION: Wednesday 17 September 2014
  • TIME OF AUDITION: 4.30pm – sign in and own warm-up
    5 – 7pm: auditions class and presentation of work
  • VENUE: Flatfoot dance studio (Howard College Campus – UKZN) DURBAN

PREPARATION:

1.The 1st half of the audition will take the form of a basic contemporary dance warm-up and technique to ascertain dancer’s ability to move out of and beyond only a classical dance style. Loots will look for dancer’s ability to pick up steps quickly and willingness to seamlessly move between styles of dance.

2.You are required to prepare a 1 minute solo to showcase your classical training (either Bharatha Natayam or Kathak). Do not exceed the 1min time frame!

  1. Please prepare a 2 page CV (do NOT exceed the 2 page limit) that you need to e-mail to Craighead@ukzn.ac.za
  2. Submission of a CV must be done by Monday 15th September before 4pm.
  3. The CV must contain a contact cell/home number where you can be reached easily.
  4. FLATFOOT will contact you on Tuesday the 16th to let you know if you have been shortlisted for the audition on Wednesday the 17th.
