Kirtan Jozi is here

kirtan joziAbout Kirtan Jozi
They are a small team of kirtan lovers, setting out to make this musical form of meditation easy, accessible and fun for everyone. Kirtan is ancient form of devotional chanting stemming from the practice of Bhakti Yoga (yoga of devotion). The chanting is accompanied by musical instruments and a participating audience.

Most of their team members found Kirtan through the teachings of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a medieval saint and Avatar who started a revolution when he broke the practice of sacred song and dance out of the temples and into the streets of India over 500 years ago. This practice rippled through the years and was brought to the western world in the 1960’s by Srila Prabhupada. His message called attention to a worldwide identity crisis – we discriminate on the basis of class, race and religion, but beneath the temporary covering of the body, we are all equal. The more deeply we realise this fact, the more we can see everyone as valuable and worthy of our love and compassion. The Kirtan Jozi team are committed to creating opportunities for Jo’burgers to experience the power and relevance of this ancient spiritual practise, through regular events.

We want to create pockets of Kirtan followers all around Jozi and aim to achieve this by establishing the following:

Bhakti Yoga Society (BYS) Kirtan Festivals
They are fortunate to have a very strong BYS team who are continuously preaching and spreading love of God and we will be teaming up with these wonderful devotees to have:
– University of Witwatersrand Kirtan festivals once every 2 months
– University of Pretoria Kirtan festivals once every 2 months

6 Hour Kirtan Festivals
This is already a very popular format of Kirtan worldwide and we have had many successful Kirtan festival in the past. We plan to have a minimum of 3 Kirtan festivals in a calendar year where we invite one and all to come in and join us for a full 6 hours of blissful chanting and dancing.

Mantra Lounge
If you’d like a dose of soothing meditation and Kirtan to start the weekend, join them for Kirtan at the Mantra Lounge. Each session is led by a different Kirtan artist. Keep an eye out for the venue and schedule for the Mantra Lounge.

Harinam – congregational dancing and chanting on the streets
For the last 8 years, a dedicated follower of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and avid lover of Kirtan, Lokanatha Das, has been religiously heading up a team of individuals on a once-a-month Harinam in Jo’burg CBD. Kirtan Jozi will be teaming up with him in an effort to grow this wonderful program of taking chanting and dancing to the streets of Jozi.

Their programs will be communicated by our website: www.kirtanjozi. com as well as their Facebook page: KirtanJozi.
