The man was rushed to Osindisweni Hospital‚ 11km from where he was hit by a vehicle on Saturday afternoon‚ but was turned away.

Head of Reaction Unit SA Prem Balram said paramedics had telephoned the trauma unit to inform its team that a patient was on the way.

Balram said that on arrival at the hospital paramedics were confronted by a doctor and five nurses who refused to treat the patient and “questioned why a dying man was brought to their trauma centre”.

“Paramedics informed the doctor that prior arrangement was made with a nurse who accepted the patient telephonically‚ and the nurses replied that the new intern was on training and did not know the hospital rules‚” he said.

The paramedics then rushed the patient to Gandhi Hospital in Phoenix where trauma unit staff also refused to treat him.

“Nurses at the Gandhi then began complaining and called a senior doctor who refused to treat the patient stating the medics should take the patient back to Osindisweni Hospital as the accident had occurred in the Verulam area‚” Balram said.

He said that when paramedics explained that the patient was critical‚ the doctor advised them to leave the hospital.

“Another nurse then asked them to proceed to Addington Hospital. Medics contacted Addington Hospital and the nurse refused to accept the patient stating that they were at Gandhi Hospital and that doctor should help.

“Our cellphone was handed to a nurse from Gandhi to talk to nurses from Addington Hospital and an argument broke out between the two‚” he said.

Shortly after the doctor walked away‚ the man’s condition deteriorated.

Paramedics performed CPR‚ however‚ the man died in the presence of a family member who had accompanied him in the ambulance.

Dhlomo will release the preliminary findings of the probe on Tuesday afternoon.
