Acting 101 – The Pop Up Studio By Rajesh Gopie

Acting-300x300Lenasia and surrounding areas can look forward to a unique opportunity for anyone wanting to explore acting in the television and film industry.

The Pop Up Studio – Acting 101 is spearheaded by award winning actor and playwright, Rajesh Gopie, who served as director in residence at the Wits Drama Department. Skilled actors from minority groups are in demand and this pioneering innitiative will make basic training accessible away from the city centre.

The workshops will held over two weeks on a part-time basis during the month of October. It is intended to be a fun, practical course, facilitated by top notch acting professionals.

Heading this formidable group will be Rajesh Gopie, an expert teacher with a Masters in actor training and coaching from Royal Central School of Speech and drama in London. He has worked internationally in film and theatre and will focus on the actors physical preparation, voice and text work.

A massive bonus is having Christa Schamberger, South Africa’s foremost casting director in film and TV on the team. She is responsible for casting on films and international television series such as Invictus, Chappie, Black Sails, Dominion, Strike Back to name just a few. With an Emmy nomination for “Generation Kill” and having worked with directors such as Clint Eastwood, Tom Hooper, Sean Penn, Mira Nair, Christa is well placed to take participants through the audition process and suggest how to realistically prepare for those challenges.

Joining the team will be Tina Johnson, a New York based acting teacher who has coached in theatre and film all over the world. Her latest coaching entailed working on a film in Mumbai which will star Anil Kapoor’s son in his debut film. Tina will focus on acting technique, the fundamentals of developing a role and creating a character.

In addition, participants will work with professional film cinematographer, Eran Tahor, to experience the “real thing” when working in front of a camera. Also, there will be motivational talks on the performance industry by working actors and directors.

The Pop Up studio does not instantaneously turn you into a professional actor but is a foundation course useful for newcommers and old hands alike. The idea is to nurture your dream and guide your career towards further learning.

Those wishing to be part of this exciting initiative must be 18 years and older. Mature participants are welcomed!

The structure of the course enables those who have full time jobs to attend. Only 15 places available and participants are required to attend an interview process which will be held at the Pop Up Studio Open day on 23 September at Shardha Mandhir School at 6 pm.

All workshops will take place at the Shardha Madhir School from 12 to 31 October and will be run nightly Monday to Friday from 5:30 to 9:30 and from 10- 5 on a Saturdays. There will be a gap week (18-25th Oct) which is set aside for self learning and rehearsals.
