Roodepoort Primary is set to open for teachers on September 8 and for learners on September 9.

The report was handed over by Premier David Makhura at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature to MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi.

“Roodepoort Primary is set to open for teachers on September 8 and for learners on September 9. We hope that the recommendations proposed by the committee to resolve the schooling issues and the broader social challenges, are implemented to ensure that stability is maintained,” said the Kathrada Foundation Director, Neeshan Balton.

“Recommendations include not only goals that can be accomplished in the short term, but also processes of social cohesion, reconciliation and healing through formal dialogue.”

He added that he was pleased that learners’ interests were prioritised, based on the Constitution and the South African Schools Act.

“Bearing in mind the type of tensions faced within the school and community, we are pleased that the report prioritises the right of basic education to be realised in a system that combats racism, sexism and all other forms of unfair discrimination and intolerances.”

A representative of the Foundation, Sean Moodley, served on the mediation team, along with religious leaders and members of civil society.

Commenting on the mediation team, Balton explained that the provincial government had pioneered methodology where it handed over a mandate to a group of independent individuals and members of civil society to look into issues and propose recommendations.

“This approach shows that through a coordinated and united approach, government, civil society and members of the public can work together to resolve challenges. The Foundation is honoured to have been part of the process, and we will continue contributing to solutions where we can,” Balton said.
