Interview with Rani Mukherjee, A Hijra

A short interview with a hijra (transexual) that Myriam Raja met while in Pakistan. Done as part of research for a documentary project she was working on at the time.

Her name is Rani Mukherjee and here she speaks specifically about her views on relationships, and her relationship with her birth mother. Rani was deserted by her family who branded her an ’embarrassment’ and told her to never come near them again.

Myriam Raja applied for the Commonwealth Foundation Film Grant, for a grant of £8,000 to travel back to Pakistan and to enable Rani to go on a journey to meet her birth mother and possibly ask for acceptance. They received over 500 applications, and I felt very lucky to have been part of the final 8. I especially want to thank B3 Media who worked on helping me develop this documentary project.

I didn’t get the funding, but I still have my passion and I think Rani deserves to have her story told. If you do too then please ‘like’ or leave a comment. I’m currently working on fundraising to make this project happen.
