Meeting The Indian Parents Is Like THIS!

Have you ever brought a date home and witnessed your parents rolling their eyes? Happens to all of us, right?

*Moment of silence for unfortunate date*

Our parents have a lot to say when it comes to choosing our life partner. Their approval is the last stage of the relationship, after which the couple decides to settle down. While some parents may happily welcome the new member into the family, some aren’t that happy. For them, their kids deserve the best, and only they can choose the best.

But the truth remains – for any relationship to flourish, the passing-the-parents stage is important. They can either make or break a relationship. Here’s how parents matter when it comes to taking one of life’s most important decisions.

Couples often end their relationships when their parents don’t approve of their choice of partner. It gets complicated when you’ve got to cajole them to say yes or else there is no other way to take it forward. Often inter-caste couples have to face this opposition, as being from different castes is almost unacceptable in India.

2. When parents ‘okay’ the relationship is when couples take it to the next level

Once the ‘chai pe bulaya hai’ program is sorted, couples then take the next important step – marriage. Until then, it’s only dating. It’s important that both sets of parents like the girl and guy during the ‘meet the parents’ program. It really is the basis for everything running smoothly from here on out.

A lot of manipulation starts once you decide to get married. Your parents decide that they know who you will be happy with, and in order to choose this person, they will begin to manipulate you. Even if their intentions are to see you happy, they will try to push you to pick someone they chose for you.

4. Couples elope because of parental rejection

Since parents remain adamant about not letting the new person enter the family, couples have no other alternative but to elope. Eloping is never a couple’s go-to option, but is often resorted to after the couple are compelled by the families to do so.

5. When parents are supportive, a relationship grows stronger

When your mother and father accept your partner the way they are, it shows how large-hearted they are. It is when your mother explains the traditions with love to your partner, and understands when she goofs ups, that you can see how progressive an individual she is.

6. You must know when their opinions should matter

Breaking a relationship just because your parents don’t approve of your partner is not a solution. As adults, you must know how to value your own opinions when it comes to important decisions like who you want to spend your life with. There is no doubt that you respect them. However, you cannot ignore yourself and listen to them while selecting a partner.

7. If they love you, they will understand what’s good for you

Your dad might be a tough man while judging your would-be husband. He has to be. If he judges him according to his character and not according to his salary, he’s doing it right. Parents who love their kids understand what’s good for them, and will eventually let them have their way.
