Sanjay Dutt is no stranger to controversy and his history of drug abuse is well documented.
In a dramatic reflection of his drug hazed past the Bollywood real life bad boy discussed his addiction, the famous gun incident as well as the biopic of his life.
Sanjay Dutt was a guest at the Young FICCI Ladies Organisation accompanied by his sister, Priya and friend Pooja Bhatt. Dutt professed to the audience in Delhi that the drug addiction had already taken him over during the period when his mother was battling cancer.
Sanjay said that it is important to understand that it is an illness and requires treatment.
‘Rocky’ (his debut film) was being made and I remember that I was so addicted that once I travelled with 1kg heroine hidden in my shoes. My two sisters were also with me on the same flight. At that time, checking at airports was not so strict. Today, when I think about the incident, I get scared. Main pakda jaata toh theek tha, but what about my sisters? Drugs do this to you. You don’t care about family or anything else.”
Sharing another incident, he said, “I used to do a lot of cocaine then. And cocaine aapko upar le jata hai, toh aapko neeche aane ke liye daaru peeni padti hai. One day, I came home high, had alcohol and went to sleep. When I woke up, I asked the house help to get me something to eat. And he told me ‘Baba aap do din baad khana kha rahe hain’. I looked at myself in the mirror and felt ki main 100% marne wala hoon, that was when I asked my father for help.”
Sanjay Dutt: There is no drug I haven’t done
After Dutt came out of jail in February this year, TOI asked him what he was going to speak about at a seminar earlier in the year and he said, ‘Ab pata nahin, wahan joh dil se niklega woh bolunga’. The sessions were supposed to be short, not more than 15 minutes. However, when Dutt got on stage and started talking – about being booked under TADA, his jail term and drug abuse – it went on for more than an hour.
I didn’t know what TADA was
Going back to 23 years ago, when he was booked under TADA, Dutt said, “I was shooting in Mauritus when my sister called and said that I was being charged for keeping rifles, and I said, ‘Oh really?’ Then dad called me and asked me to meet the Indian embassy officials. I went to the embassy and they said, ‘Koi nahin, tum shooting finish kar ke aa jao’. But I couldn’t, because I didn’t know what was happening back home. When I reached Bombay airport, tab woh purana wala airport tha, I was coming down from the slide, and I saw 50,000 policemen pointing their guns at me, as if I was Osama Bin Laden.”
Dutt added, “Every person in India should know the law, be it entertainment tax or Income Tax. I made a mistake by not knowing the law. I chose to come back and say that I have not made a mistake, whatever I have done wrong, please usko dekh ke joh punishment hai de do, aur maaf kar do. I thought that the police would let me go, since I was a first-time offender. I was taken to the crime branch… And then suddenly, TADA (Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act). I swear I didn’t know what TADA was. When MN Singh (the then Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Mumbai) came and said that I was being booked in the Mumbai blast case, I broke down. I was like, ‘How can you expect me to blast my own city? Go against my country?’ He said, ‘I am sorry, but I have to arrest you’.”
Jail mein main makkhi nikaal kar daal pi jaata tha
Talking about the first time he went to jail, he said, “When I was in prison, it was very difficult time for dad, Priya and me. She came to meet me on Rakhi and I gave her the coupons that I collected in jail.” Talking about his recent stint in jail, he said, “In the Pune jail, there are flies all over, billions of flies, in your hair, in your clothes and even in your food. Main makkhi nikaal kar daal pi jaata tha, mera co-accused daal nahin peeta tha. Maine usko bola, ‘Yaar, tu kab tak bhookha rahega?’ Usne poocha, ‘Tu makkhi wali daal kaise pi jata hai?’ Toh maine bola, ‘Yahan protein nahin milta hai, daal mein protein hota hai’.” Later, Dutt added, “Aaj biwi ne ghar mein kaali daal phir se banayi toh main complain nahi kar sakta!”
Dutt also had a message for youngsters. He said, “I started taking drugs because main ladkiyon se baat nahi kar pata tha. Somebody told me that if you try this, you will be able to talk to women, so I tried and it worked. What I want to tell youngsters today is that I have gone through a lot because of substance abuse. It is better to be high on life than on any substance. Do good work and get appreciated, there is no better high than that in life.”
About his much talked about biopic, Dutt said, “Meri life kaafi interesting hogi ki Raju Hirani saab jaise director ko pasand aayi. Ranbir is playing me, aur unki haalat kafi kaharab hai. Unka mujhe roz phone aata hai. He wants to spend days and weeks with me, but I can’t spend more than half an hour with anybody. I have been trying to avoid him, it is a difficult role for him to play. He is a fine actor though.”
Ranbir won’t be able to play Sanjay just by spending weeks with him: Pooja Bhatt
About Ranbir playing Sanjay in the later’s biopic, Pooja said, “Ranbir ko bolo aise nahin hoga. Thoda jeena padega, thoda girna padega, aise hi Sanjay Dutt nahi bante. Aaj kal ki joh generation hai, they live too cautiously, nobody says anything without a PR person, nobody steps out without a stylist. When Sanju cut his hair in that mowhak style and wore that ganji, it became a rage. I don’t think that just by spending weeks with Sanjay, Ranbir will be able to play him. Maybe he needs a few more knocks.” Sanjay also added that he has decided to work on a sequel of ‘Sadak’ with Pooja.
