Nair Creates Cricket History Joining #300Club

INDIA V ENGLAND, 5TH TEST: Karun Nair blended solid defence with a wide array of shots to compile a memorable triple ton. He crunched 32 boundaries and four sixes in his verve-filled innings of 303 not out.

303 not out by Karun turned out to be the third highest individual score for India in Test matches. Virender Sehwag’s 304-ball 319 is still the highest individual score by an Indian in the longest format of the game.

Karun became the third player to convert his maiden Test century to a triple hundred after Gary Sobers (365*) and Bob Simpson (311). Vinod Kambli (224) and Dilip Sardesai (200*) are the other two Indian cricketers to have converted hundred into a double century.

3 Tests and three innings taken by Karun to score his maiden triple hundred – the fewest number of matches anyone has taken to reach the aforementioned landmark in Test cricket. The previous best was six Tests and nine innings taken by Len Hutton. It also turns out to be the highest individual score by any cricketer in his maiden series, bettering the 113-year record of Tip Foster (287).

232 runs scored by Karun in the day is the third most in a day’s play for India after 284 by Sehwag against Sri Lanka at the Brabourne Stadium in 2009 and 257 by Sehwag against South Africa the same venue in 2008. The previous most anyone scored on the fourth day of a Test match was 222 by Nathan Astle against England in Christchurch in 2002.

8 Karun became the eighth Indian to score two or more first-class triple centuries. He scored 328 for Karnataka against Tamil Nadu in the 2014-15 Ranji Trophy season, which is the highest in a Ranji Trophy final. He joined Cheteshwar Pujara (3), Ravindra Jadeja (3), Vijay Hazare, Raman Lamba, VVS Laxman, Wasim Jaffer and Virender Sehwag in the elite list.

759/7 decl. is the highest ever team total for India in Tests and the fourth time they have scored 700-plus in an innings. It is also the highest against England, surpassing 751 for five declare by West Indies at St Johns, Antigua in 2004.
