Palm oil which is an inferior product compared to Sunflower oil is one of the prime ingredients of your favourite choc paste, Nutella.
Each jar of Nutella has 56 roasted hazelnuts and the palm oil is the key to the smooth texture and shelf life of the product. Nutella isn’t the only delicious product that’s made with the oil in question. Chocolate bars, ice cream, cookies and pizza dough also contain palm oil, according to the World Wildlife Organization.
A recent study has shown that palm oil is linked to the aggressive spread of cancer in mice. The level of risk is unclear and more research is needed to ascertain further issues.
Even though this study has brought the risks forward of palm oil it seems there won’t be any changes to the recipe of Nutella according to Ferrero, the company that owns the brand.
“Making Nutella without palm oil would produce an inferior substitute for the real product, it would be a step backward,” Ferrero top exec Vincenzo Tapella told Reuters.
Chainstores in Italy have taken a stand against palm oil and have removed any product that contains the oil. Palm oil is the cheapest vegetable oil and costs about US$800 a ton, while sunflower oil, for example, costs US$845.
Guess what’s coming off most grocery lists this year.
