Blessed with a lineage of five generations of sitar players, Niladri Kumar is a world renowned and global icon of sitar. Niladri started learning sitar from the age of four under the guidance of his father and guru Pandit Kartick Kumar, himself a disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar. He is hailed as one of the serious exponents of Indian Classical Music and has an uncanny prodigious style in making this music appealing to the youth and the masses at large.
Today critics say that he has an unmatchable effortless mastery over the instrument and it is indeed a unique treat to witness his swift, agile, and magical fingers produce soul stirring brilliant compositions. This maverick leaves every music lover, orthodox or progressive, spellbound with his flashes of unparalleled brilliance and his slick ability to strike an instant rapport with audiences transcending all age and cultural barriers.
He was part of the Masters of the Percussion tour alongside tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain. Kumar and has also worked with Jonas Hellborg and V. Selvaganesh on their album Kali’s Son and with John McLaughlin on album Floating Point. He has been bestowed and recognized with several prestigious awards including the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, awarded to young musicians. Niladri has also won MTV Immies award for his album “If”.
Vijay Ghate started learning tabla at the age of 3. From the age of 16 he became well-known for his scintillating solo performances. He then moved to Mumbai, and for over twelve years he learnt tabla from Pandit Suresh Talwalkar. He has been accompanying many music maestros of India and abroad. His adept and enthusiastic accompaniment has made him a firm favourite of many of India’s renowned classical musicians. He is one of the few tabla players who are proficient in accompanying for instrumental, vocal, and dance music.
Vijay has a very creative mind and imagination, clarity in playing, dexterity and accuracy are part of his musical signature. He has accompanied many well-known artists like late Ustad Bismillah Khan, late Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Pandit Birju Maharaj, Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Shahid Parvez, and many others all over the world. He has been widely acknowledged for his forays into fusion with well-known artists including the Jethro Tull band, George Duke, Al Jarreau, Ravi Coltrane, Egberto Gismonti, Larry Coryell, and George Brooks. He has also collaborated with well-known Indian musicians in this field like Louis Banks, Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan, and Sivamani. He has been a part of many Carnatic (South Indian) fusion music projects with Dr.L.Subramaniam, Vikku Vinayakram, M.S. Gopalkrishnan and U. Srinivas. Vijay Ghate has lectured at Codarts University of Arts at Rotterdam.
