This morning, I felt immensely restless as with my routine I am up and 3AM daily, a dose of coffee and reading for an hour before I scan social media.
I became all sorts of emotional reading a chapter of ‘An Unsuitable Boy’ – the part where Karan Johar’s father passed away. I literally felt the pain lightning across my chest as the ventilator was removed. I stopped reading and flicked away on my Kobo app on my phone and swiped to my messages.
I reached for my phone and sent a message to Karan just to let him know my sympathies are with him, – yes I know it was his memoirs I was reading however, I felt as if I needed to prepare for a funeral right now,
However, the response back left me gob smacked.
Introducing the children as Roohi and Yash, Mr Johar said the children were “two most wonderful additions to my life and lifelines” in a statement he tweeted on Sunday morning.
Tears that streamed hot and painful turned into joy in an instant. Karan Johar, is now a father to twins – a boy and a girl – through the miracles of surrogacy. In his recently released autobiography, ‘An Unsuitable Boy’, Karan Johar had expressed a desire to adopt a child or have a surrogate child as his old-age insurance policy.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do about it but I feel like I would like to be a parent. I don’t know how it’s going to happen but I do feel the need because I have plenty of love to offer and I’d like to take it forward. This feeling needs a release and requires a platform. And that platform could be by being a parent,” he had said during the release of his book.
The kids, Yash (after his father Yash Johar and presumably Yash Chopra) and Roohi (a re-arrangement of his mom Hiroo’s name).
It is reported that on February 7th, Johar became father to twins, a boy and a girl, through surrogacy. The twins were born at Masrani Hospital in Andheri (West).
“The birth registrations were done on Friday,” BMC executive health officer Dr Padmaja Keskar said. Times Of India confirmed this from the central government website for birth and death registrations.
The renowned filmmaker has named his kids as Yash and Roohi. While Yash is derived from his late father’s name, Roohi is a rearrangement of the director’s mother’s name, Hiroo. A top BMC Health Officer confirmed the news, and Dr. Makrand Masrani delivered the babies.
Karan is yet to release a statement about this milestone event, official announcement is expected soon.
Johar’s close friend actor Shah Rukh Khan’s third baby, AbRam, too, was born in the same hospital to a surrogate mother. In June 2016, actor Tusshar Kapoor had announced the birth of his son, Laksshya, through in-vitro fertilization and surrogacy.
Karan Johar, often informally referred to as KJo, is an Indian film director, producer, screenwriter, costume designer, actor and television personality who is primarily known for his work in Hindi films.
