His audacious live shows attract full house performance that has won him a number of local & international awards for both his music and his views on apartheid and other human rights issues.

His experiences gave him the balls to challenge governmental acts prohibiting the integration of culture; he spit in the face of apartheid authority, and learned to stick fight, dance and sing like a Zulu man.

Johnny Clegg has performed on all four of Nelson Mandela’s 46664 Aids Awareness Concerts in South Africa and in Norway. Mandela has joined him on stage during the rendition of Asimbonanga, a song written by Johnny about Mandela (and other struggle heroes) during his period of incarceration.  At every live performance of this song, the audience, charged with emotion, spontaneously rises to their feet.

Clegg was hot & mainstream in the 1980s and he was the first vocal artist to use Nelson Mandela’s name in lyrics, but South Africans had the chance to hear them them after the dawning of a new democracy in 1994.

Clegg was also a member of the United Defence Force (UDF) in the 1990s, working with trade unions, which were at that time still illegal. He would translate the contradictions in the capitalist system spawned by the government into Zulu, for the average man-in-the-street. He was also instrumental in establishing the South African Musicians Association.

His blend of Western pop and African Zulu rhythms found a space on the international scene breaking through cultural barriers. In France, where he enjoys a massive following, he is fondly called Le Zulu Blanc – the white Zulu.

Johnny’s haunting refrain Impi (meaning “Zulu warriors” or “War”) regularly echoes within any South African Rugby stadium which, together with his song Great Heart from the movie Jock of The Bushveld and The Crossing (written for Dudu Ndlovu, his Zulu dance partner in the Savuka era), has achieved anthem status with crowds in his home country.

Other notable hits penned by Johnny Clegg include, amongst others, I Call Your Name, Scatterlings of Africa, African Sky Blue, Take My Heart Away, African Shadow Man, December African Rain, Kilimanjaro, Fever and many more.
