If you’re not paying attention to Indian cinema, you’re missing many of the film world’s most captivating stories.
No, not the movies themselves. Not to belittle the movies—there are many excellent films being made these days in India that are worthy of any serious movie lover’s attention—but there’s significantly greater drama inherent in watching India‘s movie fans.
Nowhere else in the world is there so much passion, pleasure, and near-religious devotion inspired amongst moviegoers as there is with the fans who track the day-to-day business of India’s movies. Zealous followers assess and consume every speck of media—the casting announcements, production updates, release date stories, song lists, trailer releases and so on, with the same devotion that an Eskimo village consumes a whale. Absolutely everything is devoured with relish, and when the day is done there’s nothing left, not even the bones.
A case in point: yesterday’s release of the 57-second teaser trailer for South India’s Tamil language film Vivegam.
