South African born, Qatar Based Pop Sensation Berneen Cereska drops her highly anticipated brand new single – the contagious, melodic and hook driven ‘Lockdown’.
Berneen’s parents are humble civil servants her father Ronnie Naidoo is a firefighter and her mom Rumba Naidoo is a nurse.
In South Africa, Berneen attended the Pinetown Girls High School. Since childhood, she has been keen to play and sing, performing at local events. In 2003, when he was 18, having several hundred pounds in his pocket and not a single acquaintance, she arrived in London to pursue a musical career.
Her first job was a membership adviser at the Golds Gym. She lived in London for 4 years, and since 2007 & she lived and worked in Lithuania , where she actively participated and conducted TV shows. Since 2009 she has been briefly returning to London, currently living and continuing her musical career in Qatar.
After a musical hiatus since 2012, Berneen is back as strong as ever and with a new determined passion to spread her music not only to her fanbase in South Africa, but also the world.
Although not one to follow the latest trends but rather to hone her own sound, Berneen is heavily influenced by artists the likes of Aliyah, Britney Spears, Pharrell Williams, Gwen Stefani, Destiny’s Child, Spice Girls, Kanye West, to name a few.
The single ‘Lockdown’ (written by Berneen) was recorded in Qatar, music production by Berneen & Lee Liyanage, with Lee as the lead producer.
Berneen remembers – “It was a crazy week. We were both extremely busy and I recorded the vocals at like 3am after going about 4 days with a total of 6 hours sleep!!! I was in zombie mode!!!! It was mastered in New York by Michael Cushion Jr.
When asking Berneen about the meaning and inspiration behind Lockdown, she notes –
“Lockdown was written years ago. It was inspired by that desperation one feels when they know they are losing that one person who they just can’t bear to lose. How we are sometimes irresponsible with love when it comes to the most important people in our lives. The confusion and questions that one tends to ask themselves during a breakup. It’s also about the hope of love being able to withstand any test and always finding its way back to its rightful place.
In 2015 after a few unsuccessful partnerships with record labels, Berneen started her own company, ‘Not A Robot Entertainment.’ Being able to make her own decision and invest her time and passion fully into her own sound and career, Berneen is on top of the world with her brand new single release – ‘Lockdown’ – a song that is bound to be a surefire Summer Hit.
When talking about her past relationships with record labels, Berneen notes – “I see myself as a rebel. I have no plans to do what the industry tells me to do and make the music that I’m apparently supposed to make in order to be successful. In the past I did so many things that I hated but was told to do. Those days are gone! I want and plan to only do things I love and want to be involved with.”
Although not based in South Africa anymore, Berneen still considers South Africa her home.
“I am always visiting SA because my family is still there. I left SA when I was 18 so I’ve spent almost half my life out of the country. No matter how much I change, I can’t change the fact that I am a South African and this is my home. It’s in my blood and this is my country. I feel it’s necessary and long over-due that I try to bring my music home. I want to do this for myself and for the people in SA that have believed in me and supported me from day 1”.
Inspired by trying to make sense out of the everyday madness of living, Berneen is expressing herself in the only way she knows best – through music and hopes to inspire and empower people to follow their dreams. Lockdown is the fruit of a very long journey and the beginning steps to her new future.
