Rehana Pillay is making music happen for artists

Celebrating 21 years of exceptional success since its launch in 1996, Sheer Publishing has cemented itself as Africa’s leading independent music publishing house.

Representing a large group of writers, composers and catalogues in various genres, Rehana Pillay sits at the helm as a Director in the royalties department at the company.

Rehana started working at Sheer Publishing in February 2002 as a short term assistant, but so impressed with her capabilities and work ethos, the founding partner and managing Director, David Alexander offered her a permanent position.

With not much background and knowledge in music publishing, Rehana began to study Music Business and Copyright Law. After learning all the aspects of the business she started working in the royalty department, and as the years passed earned the title, “Royalty Manager.

In 2012, after serving 10 years with the company, she became a shareholder and shortly after that, was given Directorship at Sheer Publishing.

Also in charge of the HR department, Rehana is responsible for a lot of day to day running of the business, leading Sheer Publishing, alongside business partners David Alexander and Karabo Motijoane, a beautiful booming business, going strong and moving ahead.

Rehana Pillay is fast segmenting her career as one of the most dynamic African women in the global  Music Publishing business. With a clientele that includes composers/writers such as of Busi Mhlongo, Cassper Nyovest, Moses Molelekwa, Ricky Rick, Zahara, Worship House, Hillsong, Sauti Sol and with some of the most prolific artists in the world Rehana is dynamic influencer in the sector.

While representing African-based publishers seeking representation in licensing music in film, TV, commercials, and radio, Sheer Publishing also represents such international music publishers as Kobalt Music, Downtown Music, Songs Music Publishing, Mushroom Music, Mute Song, Freibank Music and Saragema Music of India.

With a catalogue of more than 150 thousand copyrights, ranging from songs by iconic Oliver Mtukudzi, Miriam Makeba, Thomas Mapfumo, Sauti Sol, The Parlotones and Cassper Nyovest to mention a few, Sheer Publishing is transporting Africa’s musical treasures to the rest of the world and further making a penetration into key markets on the continent as South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana–which have developed very sophisticated media industries–to exploit its domestic and international catalogues.

Sheer Publishing has had music placements in such films as “District 9,” “Tsotsi,” and “Searching for Sugarman” “Miners Shot Down” and on television shows such as “Private Practice,” “Jacob’s Cross,” and “Isibaya,” and in commercials for Castle Light, Vodacom, MTN, Cadbury’s PS, Wimpy, Engen, and Ackerman’s.

In 2011 the company invested in a local library, and bought Skumba Music that had 1,500 tracks. And have built it to where Skumba Music now has 15,000 tracks, most of them instrumental, background music for TV. Making this the largest diverse African music library that is available under the blanket license.

With a full-time staff of 15 in Johannesburg, the firm also has part-time agents in Accra, Yaoundé, and Nairobi. And roles range from royalty manager, library and commercial music staff, accounts and copyright administration. With the satellite agents, Sheer Publishing has become very active in the Anglophone territories of Africa
