GALA: Gay & Lesbian Memory In Action

GALA is a centre for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) culture and education in Africa.

GALA is ground zero of South Africa’s LGBTQ movement: its community center is a critical place of support for Johannesburg’s LGBTQ youth, particularly those who are transgender or gender nonconforming as there are very few public spaces where they can safely be out.

Keval Harie runs the South Africa’s center for LGBTQ culture and education, GALA – Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action (GALA), located in Johannesburg.

GALA also preserves history that would otherwise be forgotten–such as the LGBTQ heroes of the anti-Apartheid movement and shares that knowledge with schools, community centers, and faith organization throughout South Africa.

GALA is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the launch of an exhibition showcasing some of the treasures, stories and personalities found in GALA’s archival collections. It will be held on 5 November at 18:30–21:30 at the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre, 1 Duncombe Road, Forest Town
