SA film ‘INXEBA’ shortlists for Oscars

The official website of the Oscars released the list of nine features which have advanced to the next round of voting in the Foreign Language Film category and the Rajkummar Rao starrer Newton, which was India’s official entry in the Foreign Language Film category at the 2018 Oscars, couldn’t make it to the final list of nominations list.

South African film Inxeba (The Wound) has been shortlisted for a foreign language Oscar award. Inxeba follows the journey of young gay men who battle with their identity during the traditional initiation rite of passage.

It stars local singer and author Nakhane Toure as the lead character.

A total of 92 films had been submitted for consideration.

The nine films competing for the best foreign language film Oscar are:

  1. Chile, A Fantastic Woman
  2. Germany, In the Fade
  3. Hungary, On Body and Soul
  4. Israel, Foxtrot
  5. Lebanon, The Insult
  6. Russia, Loveless
  7. Senegal, Félicité
  8. South Africa, The Wound
  9. Sweden, The Square

The nominations for Academy Awards 2018 will be announced on January 23, 2018, and the awards will take place on March 4, 2018 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
