South African photojournalist Shiraaz Mahomed is alive and safe as confirmed by humanitarian relief organisation ‘The Gift of The Givers’ after having received a message late last night.
Tomorrow marks exactly one year since Mahomed’s capture in Syria while he was on his way back to the Turkish border. Mahomed was part of the group that was documenting the hardship of the Syrian people.
It’s still unclear why he was captured and as yet no ransom demands have been made. Founder of the Gift of the Givers, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman says that they are busy with negotiations for the safe return of Mahomed as they run the AR Rahma Hospital in Syria and may be well-equipped to deal with the people there.
