#MyFordStory Giving back to the poor in Chatsworth

PRETORIA: The concept of brotherhood amongst car fanatics is legendary. Nowhere more so than between the cast members of ‘The Fast and the Furious’ franchise, where Vin Diesel’s character Dominic Toretto once famously said: “I don’t have friends, I got family.”

Tapping into this enduring ethos of brotherhood, a million miles away from but inspired by Hollywood, six ‘brothers from another mother’ formed the Durban chapter of Ford ST Fanatics in January 2016. The core attribute of the ST (Sports Technologies) DNA is a balance of performance and style.

In a year, the club attracted more than 50 members, and now has around 650 followers on their Facebook page

Behind the kaleidoscope of shiny hoods, gleaming mags, and personalised number plates is just a bunch of good-natured guys with hearts of gold.

The club’s motto: ‘Blood makes you related, loyalty makes you family’ is ingrained in everything they do, and demonstrates that brotherhood runs a lot deeper than shared genes.

In an emotional Facebook post, member Sungran Chetty relayed how, just ten minutes after having a car accident in rush-hour traffic that morning, his “ST bros” started arriving at the scene to be with him and his injured wife. After being discharged from hospital, he said: “One bro even had time to stop and get me my fave supper.”

Community outreach for the club involves driving in convoy to Welbedacht, an impoverished community bordering Chatsworth, three to four times a year, to feed around 500 residents. Whatever food and cold drinks are not sponsored, the club members pay for out of their own pockets.

“Hopefully we reach everybody’s stomachs,” says member Vernon Govender.

Motoring highlights on the club’s calendar over the past two years have included a road trip to East London to participate in drag racing at the Grand Prix Circuit, an old school versus new school Dyno Day – pitting millennial Fords against their vintage relatives, and the unveiling of ‘Kosi’s MonSTer’, the fastest stock turbo 225 ST in the world. It is emblazoned with an ‘In memory of Kosi’ decal, in honour of a late friend.

Like most car clubs around the world, these coastal petrolheads took ownership of a brand they each loved individually, to build a whole new family they were proud to be a part of collectively. “We are strictly Ford guys,” says Govender. “Look at how the Ford brand brought together something really amazing.”
