The Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal have confirmed that the device that was found in the Imam Hussain Mosque in Ottawa near Verulam, north of Durban last night is a bomb.
It is believed to have been discovered by workmen preparing the mosque for evening prayers. Last night, the mosque and more than 20 neighbouring homes were was evacuated. The discovery was made three days after three men stormed the mosque with knives, and stabbed thirty-four-year-old father of two Abbas Essop to death, leaving two others seriously wounded.
According to Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo – their explosives team is still working on the device to determine the substances they contain.
