Having sex is a lot like going to the gym. Doing either of them well requires a high level of commitment to the act. They’re known to boost your confidence. And they’re pretty great methods of burning calories.
So if your last session between the sheets left you sweaty and breathless — like after you’re off the treadmill, but better (way better) — you might be on to something. And science has got your back on this one with a study conducted in 2013 by scientists at the University of Montreal that gives one a deeper insight into just how many calories you can burn by having sex.
The researchers at the University observed 21 heterosexual couples, who had to wear the SenseWear fitness tracker during intercourse. These couples later, also ran on the treadmill for 30 minutes to compare the amount of calories burnt during sex and cardio. The findings were then published in Plos One, a peer-review journal.

The study discovered that men burned about 100 calories during an average romp while women, on the other hand, burned just 69.

Additionally, the researchers also estimated that men burn around 4.2 calories per minute during intercourse while women burn 3.1 calories. However, the total number of calories burned during sex turned out to be far less than those burnt during exercise.
But before you find yourself disappointed by those figures, note that the study was based on the average amount of time the couples had sex (25 minutes). So if you can last longer in bed, you’re likely to burn more calories. An easy way to find out is to multiply the number of minutes you’ve had sex for with the researchers’ 4.2 calories figure which will get you an approximate total number of calories burnt.
But no matter how good you get in the bedroom, bumping uglies is never going to substitute for an actual workout if you’re seriously planning on losing weight and bettering your health.
We’re sorry to burst your bubble but if you really, truly want to get fit, then only sex isn’t going to help.
We bet you know the answer to that.
