Casting Karan Johar’s ‘Takht’ Actors

BOLLYWOOD: After a string of successful productions, Karan Johar is all set to return to direction after a gap of two years since his last directorial ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil‘.

Karan announced the title of his next flick – ‘Takht’ on August 9. “An incredible story embedded in history…An epic battle for the majestic Mughal throne… A story of a family, of ambition, of greed, of betrayal, of love & of succession…TAKHT is about WAR for LOVE….(sic),” Karan wrote.

He announced the film’s lead cast in his succeeding tweet. ‘Takht’ will feature Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Bhumi Pednekar, Vicky Kaushal, Janhvi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor.

This is the first time when Karan Johar, who is a self-admitted fan of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s grand period dramas, will be trying his hand at a historic film.

In an interview with Film Companion, Karan explained, “It’s about two warring brothers and it’s based on facts…It’s like the K3G (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham) of the Mughal era. But it’s more extreme, there is more betrayal. It has the tropes of court politics. It’s so rich in texture.”

While it’s not yet known when exactly will the film go on floors, the poster mentions that ‘Takht’ will hit the cinemal halls in 2020.

Anil Kapoor

Karan Johar’s annoucement has led to a lot of speculations. As per a Bollywood Hungama report, Anil Kapoor will play the role of Shah Jahan in the film.  He is known to be one of the most competent Mughal Emperors but was imprisoned by his own son Aurangzeb during the war of succession.

Kareena Kapoor-Khan

Kareena Kapoor Khan will reportedly essay the role of Anil’s daughter and Ranveer Singh and Vicky Kaushal’s sister – Jahanara Begum. Kareena agreed to do the part not just because of her bond with Karan Johar but also because of the fabulous role she plays.  She was a highly influential lady in the Mughal court during Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb’s reigns. She was known to speak her mind.

Vicky Kaushal

That the film is going to be about two warring brothers was already known but there was a lot of confustion around who will play the ruthless ruler Aurangzeb. But DNA was the first one to confirm that the film will see Vicky play Aurangzeb while Ranveer Singh will be seen essaying the role of his elder brother Dara Shikoh’s part. According to legend, there was a tussle between the two brothers over the throne, which is the literal translation of the word takht
