Ganesh Chaturthi: A recipe for Chana Dal Modak

With Ganesh Chaturthi round the corner happening on 2 September 2019 (Monday), most of you are heading to a confectionary store for laddoo or modak, a sweet that is said to be the favourite of Lord Ganesh.

Here’s a novel recipe for Chana Dal Modak if you keen to try this for the elephant headed Hindu gods’ special celebration. Jai Ganapati Bappa Morya!

Ingredients for dough

  • 1 cup Mawa (see below how to prepare this)
  • a pinch of salt
  • boiling water
  • 2 tsp oil

Ingredients for filling

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup chana dal
  • 2.5 cup grated coconut
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder
  • 1 tsp ghee


  • Ideally steam or boil the Chana dal in a pressure cooker
  • Add in 2.5 cup of water
  • After the Chana dal has softened to the proper texture
  • Add brown sugar and water in a sauce pan and heat till it is melted.
  • Strain and set aside.
  • Pour this back into the same kadai.
  • Add in coconut, cooked chana dal and mix well.
  • Keep cooking this till it is thick.
  • Add in cardamom powder, ghee and mix well.

Remove this to a bowl and allow it to cool down.
Divide it into small balls. Now make the dough.
Take water in a sauce pan, add in salt and 1 tsp of oil.
Once the water reaches a boil add in rice flour and mix well until it becomes a sticky dough.

Now remove this to a bowl and let it cool for 15 mins.

Once it is cooled, add in 1 tsp of oil and make it into a soft dough preferable if you use a mould pan that will make life easier.

Prepare the laddoo/modak into shape to add the filling and then complete it with more dough into shape or into a ball.

Now place the modak/ladoo in a steamer and steam it for 8 to 10 mins. Let it cool for 5 mins before removing and serve.

Preparation of Mawa

Unsalted Ricotta cheese – Take two cups of ricotta cheese, cook it for about 10 minute in a non-stick sauce pan. Add two tablespoon butter to it and three cups of carnation dry milk powder. Keep on stirring constantly, until it reaches “Khoya” consistency, about 7 minutes on medium heat.
