Saths Cooper ‘a catastrophe’ for the SABC board says EFF & DA

#CAPETOWN: It clearly is a game of thrones scenario when it had come to the selection of the 8 candidates for the – yet again – SABC Board.

The Parliament’s portfolio committee on communications has not reached consensus on the eight candidates for the SABC board.

The Democratic Alliance approved four of the 8 whereas the Economic Freedom Front bent the knee for just one of the 8 chosen candidates.

The ANC’s 8 preferred candidates are: Mary Papayya, Jasmina Patel, Dr Marcia Socikwa, Mamodupi Mohlala-Mulaudzi, Bernedette Muthien, Advocate Benjamin Lekalakala, Professor Saths Cooper and David Maimela.

The DA were willing to support Papayya, Socikwa, Mohlala-Mulaudzi and Patel. The party’s Phumzile van Damme lamented the fact that there was no chartered accountant on the ANC’s list, which is what the committee had agreed was necessary expertise for the board.

Saths Cooper vs Phumzile van Damme

Van Damme was adamant to the appointment of Professor Cooper, who she said had demonstrated authoritarian rule at previous institutions.

Van Damme also stated that Cooper refused to answer questions from the committee on a damning ministerial report.

Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said the EFF agreed with van Damme on the opposition of Professor Cooper citing that he (Cooper) would be a catastrophe for the board.

The EFF’s Ndlozi called for the removal of Cooper and Maimela to be replaced with Lulama Mokhobo and Nokuzola Ehrens as there was a lack of representation of women on the SABC Board.

Van Damme and Ndlozi will have their opportunity to raise their objections to the report which will be brought before the National Assembly.
