We have grown up with our parents complaining about how we are always glued to the phone. While they said that the possible ill effects of phone-addiction are strain on the eyes, headache, sleep deprivation, and social awkwardness, they definitely didn’t mention murder!
According to recent reports, a 32-year-old man strangled his 22-year-old wife because she was constantly watching online videos on her phone.
A police officer told HT that the two would often fight. At the night of the incident, the couple along with their 2-year-old son were living at Chowgule’s father’s home in MIDC.
Sources revealed that it all started when Aarti asked her husband, Chetan Chowgule, for Rs. 1000. He declined, reasoning that since he was unemployed he couldn’t afford to give her the amount. That’s how a fight started between the two.
Before sleeping, Chowgule saw that his wife was glued to her smartphone watching videos. However, when he later woke up at 4 am, he found her awake, still watching videos.
An argument started again and in a fit of rage, Chowgule strangled her with plastic, while their son slept next to them.
Later when he saw that his wife wasn’t moving, he tried to wake her up by sprinkling water on her face. He then realised that he had killed her.
He went to the police station at 4.30 am and confessed his crime, surrendering himself. He was arrested under section 302 (punishment for murder).
It’s shocking how even what seems like a harmless addiction can insight another to commit murder!
