NEWS: No parent is prepared for a child’s death, we as humans are simply not supposed to outlive our children. It is important to remember that how long your child lived does not determine the size of your loss. The loss of a child is profound at every age. At 7.56AM this morning, 16 May 2019, little Shanaya Govender passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and friends.
Baby Shanaya Govender became South Africa’s darling child that has been battling a rare form of cancer known as ‘Ewings Sarcoma’ since she was just three-years-old. It was on the 14 April,2017 (Tamil New Year) that she became ill, waking up in the middle of the night screaming with pain in her left arm and a fever of 41 degrees. After being seen by an orthopaedic specialist and various other specialists she was eventually diagnosed correctly with ‘Ewings Sarcoma’ cancer.
Her parents posted this message on social media,
Our world has turned the brightest pink. Our princess has turned into a star to shine bright on us forever. She did it her way in true ‘Shanaya the First’ style.
Shanaya passed away now at 7:56am. She wanted her favourite dress, her wig, her tiara, her high heels and make up. She made us call everyone she is close to then stopped breathing and heart stopped. She did it her way. No pain no suffering. We ask for everyone to please give us some space at this time.
We will communicate the details of her celebration of life. The Govender family
Fighting the battle of cancer for everyone
The Govender family changed their entire life routine, giving up their jobs and spending as much time possible with little Shanaya. Their focus was to keep Shanaya comfortable as well as to look at groundbreaking treatments to aid Shanaya’s quality of life. The South African and international community rallied to their call for financial aid that assisted the Govender family to give Shanaya the best life possible. The call for funding reached thousands of people across the globe that contributed to the BackaBuddy campaign that raised over R130, 000 to aid the family.
Shanaya’s parents have requested that the public to bear with them as they prepare for Shanaya’s last rites dubbing it ‘Her Celebration of Life’.
Our deepest condolences to the Govender family on the loss of their angel and our champion, Shanaya who touched so many lives with her indomitable spirit!
