#INDIA: The picturesque ski resort of Auli situated in Chamoli district of the Garhwal Himalayas is set to host what may well be the most high-profile wedding to be hosted in the region of Uttarakhand in recent times.
The Gupta family who fled South Africa amidst corruption and state capture allegations are set to celebrate the wedding of two members of their controversial family.
The mega-wedding bash is set to occur over a period of four days in June at the premier ski resort for which unprecedented arrangements are being made.
The Gupta brothers, known for their proximity to former South African President Jacob Zuma, were in the news recently because of I-T raids being conducted at their residences.
The brothers also made offer of gold-plating the sanctum sanctorum of the Badrinath temple which was subsequently rejected by the temple committee.
The family has now decided to hold a big-splash wedding ceremony for Ajay Gupta’s son Suryakant and Atul Gupta’s son Shashank for which according to sources, a budget of a couple of hundred crores has been earmarked.
Gupta’s meeting the Chief Minister Rawat
A source in the CM office said that the Guptas had recently met CM Trivendra Rawat who discussed with them his plans to develop Uttarakhand as a premier wedding tourism destination.
“After the meeting, the family decided to opt for Auli instead of Italy where they had originally planned to have the wedding celebrations,” the source added.
“On Friday, a bhoomi pujan was also held by the Gupta brothers at Auli for the marriage ceremonies. While the wedding function of Ajay Gupta’s son Suryakant is scheduled to be held from June 18 to June 20, the ceremonies for Atul Gupta’s son Shashank would be performed from June 20 to 22. Sources said that a bevy of industrialists, politicians and Bollywood celebrities are expected to attend the functions for which helicopters are being chartered to ferry guests from Delhi and Mumbai to Auli.
On June 16 and 17, the family will also host a programme and dinner for locals in Auli. The sources added that an event management company has already arrived at Auli and preparations for the weddings are currently underway with the ski resort being elaborately decked up for the celebrations.
The Gupta brothers – Ajay, Rajesh and Atul – had shifted to South Africa from Saharanpur district of UP in 1993.
Last year, they had come under the radar of the Income Tax department for alleged money laundering and fraudulently amassing properties in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and NCR. Raids had been conducted by the department on several of their properties including their residence in Dehradun.
