Deepika Padukone to essay Draupadi in Mahabharat

Actor Deepika Padukone is all set to take on another ambitious project. After wrapping Chhapaak and ‘83, she will be moving on to an adaptation of the Hindu epic Mahabharat, She will produce as well as act in the Mahabharat and will essay the role of Draupadi.

The actor said that she is honoured to be part of the project. “I am thrilled to be playing the role of Draupadi. I believe that this is the role of a lifetime. While Mahabharat is popularly known for its mythological tales and cultural influence, many of life’s lessons can also be derived from the epic. However, it is narrated from the perspective of men. Recounting it through the eyes of Draupadi will not only be interesting but also significant,” Deepika said in a statement.

According to a report by Mumbai Mirror, Draupadi’s character will also be the protagonist of the film.

The project has been finalised in collaboration with Madhu Mantena and will reportedly be made in two parts, or more. The first part is scheduled for Diwali 2021.

Producer Madhu Mantena said that Deepika is the most fitting person to play the character as she can take the “narrative across borders.”

Both Mantena and Deepika are currently in talks with filmmakers who they can get on board to direct the film. They are also considering other actors to be a part of the project.

Deepika was last seen in Padmaavat. She will be seen playing the role of an acid attack survivor in Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak. She will also be seen opposite real life husband Ranveer Singh in Kabir Khan’s ‘83.

Recently, Deepika, along with badminton champion PV Sindhu, was chosen as the faces of PM Modi’s Bharat ki Laxmi campaign, which aims to shed light on the achievements of India’s women. Deepika shared a video to promote the initiative on Twitter writing, “This Diwali, let us throw light on and celebrate the contribution and accomplishments of the women of our country!”

The mythological film that will be co-produced by Deepika and Madhu Mantena, is scheduled to release on Diwali 2021.
