Emperors Palace apologizes for illegal use of SANHA Halal certification

#GAUTENG: Emperors Palace Hotel Casino Convention and Entertainment Resort situated close to O.R Tambo International airport has come under fire for misleading Muslim patrons.

The South African National Halal Authority (SANHA) stated that the Peermont property was at fault for the blatant use of the SANHA logo, illegally. Muslim patrons frequenting the property were of the understanding that the casino, hotel and dining venues were providing halal product.

The hotel and casino resort admit to using the SANHA logo without proper certification.

A notice of apology was posted in a local newspaper addressed to the Muslim community at-large and the South African National Halal Authority.

Emperors Palace would like to apologize to SANHA (South African National Halal Authority) for the unlawful usage of the SANHA logo. The unauthorised use was an oversight on our part and we regret any harm it may have caused.

According to SANHA, the Primavera Restaurant is certified Halal with the rights to display their certification. Somehow Emperors Palace used the SANHA logo to indicate that the entire venue of the hotels, casino and conferencing menus are certified to cater for halal food products.

Emperors Palace responded to Indian Spice’s queries over the matter stating,

We are currently investigating the matter and perusing the agreement between Peermont and SANHA.

The Emperors Palace website still indicates that they cater for halal guests however that website page linking to the halal menu has been taken down. The website’s Events and Conferences section is yet to be updated with respect to how and if Emperors will be catering to halal patrons.

What does Islamic principles state in terms of gambling for Muslims?

Despite the Sharia law mandate prohibiting Muslims from gambling, gamers who are followers of Islam account for a sizeable share of gaming dollars spent throughout the world. However, as most of these dollars are lost to casinos outside of the Middle East, a significant challenge remains in ensuring that these revenues are kept closer to home. ~ GGB Magazine

In Islam, gambling is not considered to be a simple game or frivolous pastime. The Quran often condemns gambling and alcohol together in the same verse, recognizing both as a social disease which is addictive and destroys personal and family lives.

Muslim scholars agree that it is acceptable or even commendable for Muslims to participate in healthy challenges, competitions, and sports. It is forbidden, however, to be involved with any betting, lottery, or other games of chance.

The general teaching in Islam is that all money is to be earned—through one’s own honest labor and thoughtful effort or knowledge. One cannot rely upon “luck” or chance to gain things that one doesn’t deserve to earn.

Such schemes only benefit a minority of people, while luring the unsuspecting—often those who can least afford it—to spend great amounts of money on the slim chance of winning more. The practice is deceptive and unlawful in Islam.
