Mary Papayya lambasts Ashwin Trikamjee over DJ Carly O comment

#DJCARLYO: Mother of DJ Carly O, Mary Papayya has lashed out at the the South African Hindu Maha Sabha president, Mr Ashwin Trikamjee for lambasting her daughter for her goddess Kali-inspired outfit.

In her statement, Papayya goes on to share some of the abusive messages they have received apart from death threats. Papayya’s husband, Tony Oosthuizen has also been targeted on social media being labeled a ‘racist’ amongst other slurs.

“One said “just shoot her and be done with it”,she is being called a “white racist”, a “B***h” and a “C**t.”

The family of DJ Carly O are now seeking relief from the authorities following the death threats received.

Maha Sabha backtracks on Sunday newspaper comment

Papayya reached out to president of the South African Hindu Maha Sabha shortly after reading his comments on DJ Carly O where he described her costume “inappropriate and disrespectful”.

In her post Papayya explains,

They speak to Hindu leaders including Ashwin Trikamjee from the SA Hindu Maha Sabha and without investigation or facts these leaders pronounce on a guilty version.

He now says he was asked to comment and that the journalist told him that Carly Bernadette Oosthuizen was “blasphemous”. He now back tracks saying if people in the community have a problem they can contact him now that “he has the facts”.

So our daughter DJ Carly O is under threatening attack on social media and receiving death threats and racial slurs. One said “just shoot her and be done with it”,she is being called a “white racist”, a “B***h” and a “C**t” and all my so called Hindu devotees. This because she did a photo-shoot for Halloween (in her own home) celebrating her favourite Goddesses – Kali Ma and Gaia.

Some members within the Hindu community said she was “disrespectful”. She was accused of “cultural expropriation.” She had nothing to apologise for but did it any way and apart from the few individuals fueling the drama hundreds more came to her support.

My husband was referred as a “racist” and several asked that me a “Indian Christian” “teach my daughter how to behave” and that it was like the “British taking over our country”.

To make matters worst a Sunday newspaper fueled tensions after it ran a story with no comment from our daughter or us but cherry picked out of context bits of posts of Instagram.

DJ Carly O draws her spiritual foundation, inspiration and strength from these two women Goddesses and celebrated them in the best way possible.

This is cultural appreciation in its highest form. It’s creativity and an artists offering. It is executed with love, deep adoration and beauty. In fact a staunch devotee in the Indian Community whom I greatly respect said: “DJ Carly O makes a lovely Kali Mata”. Gaia on the other hand is the ancestral mother of all life or “Earth Mother”. DJ Carly O – apart from her love for music, advocates for us to save the planet, is a vegetarian and an anti-animal cruelty activist with a love for all living creatures.

So here is the shocker! Carly O is named after Kali Ma. Her late maternal grandmother, my dear mum was a devotee of Mother Kali and made regular offerings to her. Kali Ma is a Goddess of power, a force of nature, protection, time, creation, preservation and compassion.

DJ Carly O continues with these offerings at Hindu religious festivals with her Tamil partner of Indian descent DJ Lee Why and also when she travels to India.

Right now DJ Carly O is in Ncala, Mozambique – doing what is her life’s work – hitting the decks – sharing her love for music – and embracing the culture of different country. Africa loves her.

Yes in her own country she is being crucified and condemned by a small minority and all in the name of their religion. Does one have to be born into Hinduism to be a Hindu? Is this Blasphemy?

Mary Papayya, DJ Carly O’s mother

The South African Hindu Maha Sabha has been approached for comment and is yet to provide one following Mary Papayya’s public statement.

  1. I agree, as a Hindu, that attacking her in a racist, hateful manner and sounding off death threats is very wrong and is not Hindu behavior, which is generally tolerant even of the worst kinds of humans. Her supposed devotion to Kaali Maa, who is both the creatix of the universe, time, and destroyer is admirable. However, Hindus are attacked by Christians every year, are called demon worshippers, coolies, and the like by whites and other Christians. Halloween is basically a demon fest, she chose to dress as Kaali in this demon fest. She was wrong, regardless of her respect for our Goddess, now she and her mom are turning the tables around when they were also wrong. However, Hindus should have handled the situation better and not let emotion get the better of them.
