The world resounded in cheer as 2019 became a memory and saw 2020 new year with spectacular firework displays from Sydney to Tokyo.
However, countries like Australia were overshadowed by deadly wildfires and the festive mood in Hong Kong and India has been dampened by protests.
Around a million revellers visited Sydney harbour and surrounds to experience more than 100,000 fireworks explode above the city, even as thousands of people along Australia’s eastern seaboard sought refuge from the bushfires on beaches. Sydney is well-known for its New Year celebrations. Due to its geographical position close to the International Date Line, it is one of the first countries in the world to welcome the New Year. In Canberra, fireworks were cancelled and event organisers said other activities, including live music performances, would also be cancelled.
