DURBAN: Denver Mariemuthoo made his first appearance at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Tuesday), he has been charged with the gruesome murder of his wife and the theft of her car. His appearance comes at a time while his late wife, Thanthoni was being laid to rest.

The community of Watsonia Drive in Tongaat, north of Durban were rattled to wake up to the news of the death of one of their fellow residents, Roxanne Thanthoni. The landlord had been alarmed to screams, had discovered her lifeless body with multiple stab wounds, after investigating.

Mariemuthoo is believed to have fled in her car which his abandoned in Stanger close to his parents residence. Sources claim that it was his mother who called the authorities soon after her son sought refuge in their home. The SAPS KZN Provincial Task Team together with assistance from K9 Security Services apprehended Mariemuthoo soon after the murder.

According to reports by East Coast Radio, Mariemuthoo has stated he would be retaining the services of Legal Aid in a bid to seek bail, represented by Lewhan Reddy. The state prosecutor, Sabelo Ziqubu has opposed bail in the matter due to the nature of the crime, the matter has been adjourned until March 10, next week.

“To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part, according to God’s holy ordinance; and thereto I pledge myself to you.”

These vows were meant to be forever till death do them part and never did Roxanne Thanthoni expect her marriage to end with her bloody murder. Daily News reports that, Thanthoni has been described as “strong, compassionate, warm and endearing.”

Area councillor Nagammah Munien, of Flamingo Heights, oThongathi described Thanthoni as “a gem of  a person”. Munien, who is related to Thanthoni’s mother, said while her father was coping with his loss, her mother was not.

“The mom is devastated, especially having spoken to her on the morning she died. She spoke to her mother on the phone at 6.30am and an hour later they learnt of her death,” he said.
