NEWS: The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that schools will now re-open on the 8th of June for Grades 7 and 12 this after various objections relating to safety and readiness of schools to operate. Learners were to report back to school today the 1st of June.
The department postponed reopening of schools to June 8 after a “substantial number of schools” in various provinces had still not received personal protective equipment (PPE). Meanwhile, the Western Cape province said schools would reopen on Monday as it had spent millions on PPE for teachers, pupils and general government staff, according to TimesLIVE.
Last Friday, teacher unions and national governing body associations unanimously expressed their position that the education system is not ready for the re-opening of schools. Federation of Governing Bodies of South African Schools (FEDSAS) Chief Executive Officer – Paul Colditz explains why the latest announcement is a good move.
