During a parliamentary session veteran actor and Samajwadi Party, MP Jaya Bachchan lashed out at actor-turned-politician Bharatiya Janata Party’s Ravi Kishan. On Monday, Kishan in his speech at the Lok Sabha made reference to the Sushant Singh Rajput drug probe by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). Bachchan’s response came after his comments on the alleged rampant use of drugs by Indian actors on Tuesday.
“I was really embarrassed and ashamed that yesterday (September 14) one of our members in the Lok Sabha, who is from the industry, spoke. I am not taking names. It is a shame,” Jaya said.
Jaya Bachchan further added that the Indian film fraternity has come out with a helping hand during moments that the country faces a national crisis. In her response, she pleaded with the government to support the industry. “People who have made a name in this industry have called it a gutter. I completely disagree and I really disassociate. At a time when the financial situation is in a depressing state and employment rate at the worst levels, in order to divert the attention of people, we are being flogged by social media and there is no support from the government.”
The Bollywood veteran added, “I think it is very very important that the government must support this industry and not kill it. Just because there are few people, you cannot tarnish the image of the entire industry.”
Bharatiya Janata Party’s Telangana MP, K Krishna Saagar Rao in a media statement said that Jaya Bachchan sounds like a “hypocrite” in the Rajya Sabha.
“She [Jaya Bachchan] hasn’t condemned the drug menace, which is destroying the lives of young people across India, including young actors and actresses in her own film industry. She hasn’t condemned drug dependence, addiction, and peddling by young Bollywood, Tollywood, sandalwood actors, whose names were recently released by NCB and some are even arrested,” Telangana BJP said.
Krishna coined Bachchan’s statements as “shallow and shameful”,
Kangana Ranaut questions Jaya Bachchan

Kangana responded, “Jaya ji would you say the same thing if in my place it was your daughter Shweta beaten, drugged and molested as a teenage, would you say the same thing if Abhieshek complained about bullying and harassment constantly and found hanging one day? Show compassion for us also”
Taapsee Pannu tweeted, “For we have always stood by the initiatives, causes and awareness campaigns. It’s time for payback. Hitting the nail on its head and how ! 👏🏼 yet again a woman from the industry spoke up. #Respect.” While Farhan Akhtar wrote, “Respect. She has always stood up to be counted when it mattered. #JayaBachchan,” Sonam Kapoor tweeted, “I want to be her when I grow up.”
Following Jaya’s scathing attack, Ravi Kishan told ANI, “I expected Jaya ji to support what I said. Not everyone in the industry consumes drugs but those who do are part of a plan to finish the world’s largest film industry. When Jaya ji & I joined, situation was not like this but now we need to protect the industry.”
Jaya Bachchan is currently a member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha from the Samajwadi Party,.
