Another tragic case of rape in India is making global headlines as a 19-year-old woman has died after being gang-raped by four men in Uttar Pradesh. The incident which occurred in Hathras, is sparking outrage, as the Dalit woman was raped by four so-called upper-caste men, she later died in a hospital in Delhi, news agency ANI reported on Tuesday, 29 September.
The victim was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a Delhi hospital, she sustained multiple fractures and her tongue cut off, NDTV reports. The Uttar Pradesh police department is currently under investigation for the manner in which the investigation was conducted. The family are also outraged at the cremation of the victim without their knowledge, the UP police stand accused of speeding up the cremation in a desperate attempt to cover-up their failure in the case.
NDTV reports that the police had at first accused the woman of lying about her injuries. A case of attempted murder was registered and a week later the rape charges were raised after the victim’s formal statement.
Rape victim gives statement before she died
Police were able to record the victim’s statement stating that she was raped by four men on 14 September while she had gone to collect fodder for animals.
The four suspects have been remanded into police custody. accused had been arrested and sent to custody. The Quint reports that the victims family also accused the police of not taking swift action against the perpetrators.
National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson, Rekha Sharma, told reporters that suo moto cognizance was taken when the incident came to the fore. Sharma said that “unfortunately, the victim passed away. We will be there to help her family. To control such incidents we need to change the mindset of the society,” ANI reported.
Meanwhile, Hathras DM stated that all four accused have been arrested. Under the SC/ST Act, her family has been given financial support of Rs 10 lakh, in total.
The DM has rubbished the reports of the victims’ tongue being chopped off as false, ANI reports. UP State Minister Siddharth Nath Singh expressed remorse, saying that “the government stands with the victim’s family.”
“The investigation started immediately and four accused have been arrested. Strict action will be taken. Law will take its own course,” he added.
Inhumane says Virat Kohli
Indian cricket team Captain Virat Kohli took to Twitter to demand justice for the 19-year-old Dalit woman who was gang-raped in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras and later died of her injuries in Delhi.
Condemning the incident, Kohli wrote, “ What happened in #Hathras is inhumane and goes beyond cruelty. Hope the culprits of this heinous crime will be brought to justice.”
