Anurag Kashyap Questioned Over Rape Allegations

Bollywood personality Anurag Kashyap appeared before Mumbai police authorities in relation to the alleged rape case filed against him by an actor. Police issued a summons against the Indian filmmaker on Wednesday, days after the actor accused the police of moving slowly in the case.

A First Incident Report (FIR) was registered last week by the actor who accuses Kashyap of sexual assault, outraging her modesty and wrongfully confining her. The alleged rape is believed to have taken place in 2013 at Kashyap’s residence. The actress also alleged that Kashyap had misbehaved with three other actresses, each of whom have denied her allegations. The film-maker issued a statement a day later denying the charges against him.

While the National Commission of Women Chairperson Rekha Sharma asked the actress to submit a written complaint, Kashyap received support from his colleagues in the film industry. On September 27, the actress and her lawyer visited the Versova police station to demand that the complaint be investigated on a priority basis. She also threatened to start a hunger strike unless police arrested Kashyap soon.

On September 28, the actress met Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale, who later announced that his party, the RPI, would launch an agitation if Kashyap was not arrested within a week.

Anurag Kashyap is an Indian film director, writer, editor, producer, actor known for his works in Hindi cinema. He is the recipient of several accolades, including four Filmfare Awards. For his contributions to film, the Government of France awarded him the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2013.
