The new girl on the starting blocks is Dhanalakshmi of Tamil Nadu who won the 100 metres sprint in this year’s National Championship beating national champ Dutee Chand. She said after the race that she had trained hard for this race but prefers the 200 metres in which she set a new meeting best in the heats thus beating the record of PT Usha. The 22-year-old from Trichy had to endure much difficulty as her father passed away when she was very young and her mother provided for the family working as a house maid. She is trained by coach Manikanda Arunmugam together with Elakkiyadasan who was second in the men’s race. It is by chance that he saw them training on their own and took them under his wing.

The sixteenth Legislative Assembly election in the state of Tamil Nadu is to be held on 6 April 2021 to elect members from 234 constituencies. At present the state is ruled by the AIADMK party and their allies. This will be the first state election after the death of both DMK’s Karunanidhi and AIADMK’s Jayalalitha. The elections is fought more by the two main parties and each with a number of election allies. The more allies you have the more votes you will garner. However this also leads to problems with seat sharing. This year the BJP who are in alliance with the ruling party will be trying very hard to make inroads into Tamilnadu using their money power. Voters are being bombarded with promises of freebies by both alliances. There are two smaller alliances one led by actor Kamalahasan and the other by TTV Dhinakaran (nephew of Sasikala – the friend of the late Jayalalitha who has just been released from jail). There is one party who are going it alone and are standing in all 234 seats. This is the Naam Tamilar party of Seeman (follower of the late Prabakaran of the LTTE) and they have a 50/50 split of women and men candidates. Hopefully they will be rewarded for their bravery. Cast and religion also plays a big part in casting of votes. Generally voters in TN don’t like any one party ruling for too long so the opposition DMK is hoping to be victorious after a ten year wait.

We have started a new initiative to purchase and courier goods that you will want from Chennai and from India. However courier charges are high for small parcels so the order should be about 6 kgs. And 11kgs even better. For smaller orders you will have to share with others.
Covid cases are drastically increasing again in India with over 37,000 new cases yesterday. Most new cases are a result of crowds in weddings, funerals and religious functions. In Tamilnadu (estimated population of about 80 million) there are now 6,222 active cases. Daily count is now almost 1000 new cases and fewer discharges. Nine people died yesterday bringing the total number of deaths in our state to 12,573. TN which was doing so well is now seeing a sharp increase of new cases. This could be because not many people are using masks anymore. Hopefully it is not the onslaught of the second wave. The fear is that the elections may affect the numbers. The vaccination process is also going quite smoothly with over 121,000 vaccinated yesterday. All figures as of Thursday night.
