Chennai News 10 September

Tomorrow marks 20 years since the 9/11 attacks on the twin towers and other sites in the US. I can still remember coming home casually putting on the TV and watching those shocking & unbelievable visuals. I was so confused that I thought it was aliens invading earth as I just could not imagine someone attacking the heart of New York in broad daylight. Many heads rolled since then, not all guilty of crimes. I still maintain that the hard-line policy to freedom fighters (regarded as terrorists by them) around the world by the US after 9/11 resulted the defeat of the LTTE in Srilanka.  Today is Vinayaka Chaturthi here and around the world including SA. Celebrations are a bit muted this year as the Tamilnadu government has banned all public celebrations and processions and asked people to observe it …

I am really happy to announce that our advertiser Gearbox Parts & Repairs has renewed his advert for the third year. Rhaven Pillay sure knows that advertising pays. He is very accessible in Mountbatten drive so please visit him for your needs. Tell him that you are a CN reader. We are enjoying Master Chef India – Tamil here on Sun TV every weekend. Some of my readers in SA told me that they are not seeing it on Sun TV there. I can only assume that Sun TV does not have the rights to show it in SA. However, you can find it on YouTube, and it is very interesting. The program is hosted by Vijay Sethupathi. The Telugu version will start this weekend with Tammanah. Boomika is the latest Tamil movie of Aishwarya Rajesh and can be seen …

We from the Chennainews family wishes all of you celebrating a very happy and prosperous Lutchmee Pooja. However hopefully with Covid restrictions you will be observing this at home and not in crowded venues. Surprisingly I don’t see people here with the red strings.  We are also in the middle of Madras week celebrating 382 years on August 22nd. Madras day commemorates the founding of the city which was a collection of small villages, Madraspattnam being the most prominent. The Municipality is the oldest one in the commonwealth outside Britain. Normally we would have a number of events to celebrate this week but now due to restrictions it has toned down to a few online events.  Netrikann (third eye) is a Tamil movie on Disney Hotstar and stars Nayantara in the main role. Durga (Nayantara) a CB-CID officer loses her …

India independence day

Sunday August 15th will herald the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence from British rule. However, we should keep in mind that Indians boast a civilization that is more that 6,000 years old and could be over 8,000 years old according to recent findings at the Harappan sites. This year will be a little more special as India did do relatively well at the just completed Olympics.  Next will be the Para-Olympics and hopefully the sportspersons who do well there will be celebrated just as much as those at the Olympics. Lots of cash awards are pouring in for those who won medals. Winners are rewarded however not much is done for them when they really need help in their formative years. My son said that this is because people get more publicity in rewarding winners than supporting at grassroot levels. …

Chennai News 6 August

Wishing all the ladies in SA for Women’s Day on 9th August. Normally there are many programs organised on this day however not sure if this is so during Level 4. However, I was told by Lexy Shunmoogam that the SA Musicians against Covid19 and the SA Tamil Federation have organised an exciting two-day festival to mark this day. See poster for more info.  All eyes were on Phoenix yesterday however luckily by all accounts the march by the EFF went off peacefully. Well done to those people who spoke to EFF and managed to change the theme to a Solidarity March from the original one which was racist in nature. Hopefully peace will prevail and those people trying to create racial divisions will fail.  Navarasa: I am really looking forward to the Tamil web-series Navarasa on the Netflix OTT …

Chennai news 9 July

India will be sending its largest contingent of 120 competitors to this year’s Olympic games. Of these 12 are from Tamilnadu. The CM has donated the equivalent of one hundred thousand rand to each of these 12 athletes. Coincidently all 5 of our track athletes are in the 400 metre relays.  One of the games that has blossomed during the lockdown is Chess as I guess it is very easy to play online especially as it involves just 2 players in a game. Indians have been doing very well at these competitions. Fifteen-year-old Praggnanandhaa who is the fifth youngest Grand Master has been invited to his first World Cup in Sochi (Russia). Thereafter he will play in tournaments in Europe. He said that he is slowly learning to play the position and not the reputation of his rivals.  Follow Chennai …
