While his visits to England and South Africa are well documented, few are aware that he made a 21-day visit to the island country in October 1901. The people of Mauritius did not know at the time how momentous it would be. Every time he went to India during those 21 years in Africa there was only one thought uppermost in his mind: the plight of the “girmitiyas”.
